Hosting Control Panel: Part II

Posted by tom June 28th, 2006

Well after some testing and toying around with XMLRPC and SOAP I’ve for now decided to use an simple WEBrick based XMLRPC server for my hosting project. I chose for XMLRPC because it seems faster than SOAP and from my own experience I know it contains less overhead per XML message. I’ve been testing some simple things, like asking for uptime over XMLRPC and starting and stopping a MySQL database server. I’ve also started with some small maintenance for Customers, Domains & Users… So, there is some progress …

Ruby on Rails and Oracle

For disbelievers: Found some nice documentation on how to setup Ruby on Rails on Oracle. One is from Oracle, the other is from the Ruby on Rails website.

So far I think the best way to install Rails on Tiger is using the HiveLogic installation which can be found here. It gives you the latest Ruby, LightTPD ready to use on your system, but also gives you a little background knowledge on how Rails is built-up, which for me is a good reason to do it this way instead of point-and-click-installations.

oXygen on Mac OSX

If you’re like me and you work on a Mac and need to edit XML files on a regular basis, take a look at oXygen. oXygen is very feature rich and works pretty nice on a Mac. oXygen is a bit of a slow starter though, but I suppose that’s the same on all platforms.

Another new book: Rails Recipes

Yesterday I received another new book: Rails Recipes by Chad Fowler. It’s a book about development patterns and covers different areas: User Interface, Database, Controller, Testing & Email. It’s a very good book to have on your shelf and know what’s in it and when you come around to develop something similar this is the book to open.

Adobe Photoshop CS2

Adobe Photoshop CS2
Well I’m currently trying out Adobe Photshop CS2, to see how different it is from older versions. I’m actually considering buying just Photoshop, which costs about $588. I’m under the impression that it’s not expensive, it’s very likely worth it’s money. It’s just a lot of money and as they keep on updating it, how am I going to keep up?
Does anyone have suggestions for a good way to purchase Photoshop legally for less?

Shiira
I’m currently trying out Shiira. It’s a good browser, please ensure you set the page Timeout to five minutes or so, setting it to Never does not work. Setting the timeout can be done with Shiira’s preferences
